Surreal, on the phone

When Alexander Graham Bell invented the first phone, it was perceived by many as a mysterious object equipped with magical powers. Ironic, time likes to draw circles and again we end up longing for the imaginary magic, now enclosed in charming vintage objects, like these black bakelite phone lamps from Crosby Street Hotel, in New York.

The real bakelite telephone lamp was designed by lighting artist Alex Randall, as a part of the 'reclamation and renovation' series.

"The Bakelite Telephones were my first lighting piece and have been our best seller ever since. The phones are such wonderful pieces in their own right that it's wonderful to be able to return them to a useful purpose. I think people love them so much because like me, they remind them of past times. For me, I remember using my grandparents'. When they upgraded to a touch-tone phone my sister and I inherited the old phone for our playhouse. I remember all those times in there talking on the phone to the make-believe characters who were coming round for a cup of tea!"

12-25 lamp by Co Twee

Who can resist the crazy colours and happiness of the 60's style? 12-25 lamp is a perfect choice for vintage-look interiors. It was designed by Co Twee (for Dark) and won Red Dot Design Award in 2003.

The lamp has been equipped with an innovative solution of a built-in magnet and can rotate 360°, in all directions (an absolute world premiere). Standard 12-25 lamp is available in glossy white, glossy black and chrome. On request also in all RAL colors.

Luminator floor lamp by Achille & Pier Giacomo Castiglioni

The design embodies the essence of minimalism: elegant, modern beauty stripped down to pure function. I was a bit surprised to learn that Luminator lamp was created in 1954. Look at its sleek silhouette! I does not make you think about the 50s, does it? The lamp is still produced by Italian company Flos, internationally known for its iconic lighting.

Achille Castiglioni and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni were inspired by the shape of silver-domed spotlight bulbs, introduced at the Italian market in the 50s. I should feature it at Proud to be the bulb post.

The Castiglioni duo became one of the most influential figures in Italian design. Their innovative designs, including Luminator lamp, are a part of A&D Design Object collection at The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

redesign: Milk bottle lamp by Tejo Remy (Droog)

Tejo Remy designed Milk bottle lamp in close collaboration with Droog, a conceptual design company founded in 1993 by product designer Gijs Bakker and design historian Renny Ramakers. Droog's collection includes more than 120 products now and it's work contributed greatly to defining Dutch design internationally.

Tejo Remy works with product, interior and public space design in Utrecht, the Netherlands. His commissioners and exhibitors include Museum of Art and Design in New York, Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum in New York, MoMA in New York, Stedelijk Musuem in Amsterdam, Museum Boymans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, ACME Gallery in Los Angeles and the Netherlands Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment.

His designs are communicative and relate directly to our feelings: "The milk bottles hang just above the floor in rows of three by four as in Dutch milk crates from the old days."

Boy’s Lamp by Nika Zupanc

Boy’s Lamp, created by Slovenian designer Nika Zupanc, is a playful interpretation of a boyish soul. Fresh design with superb sense of humour that brings back childhood memories! "In the beginning it was conceived as a song about boyhood and manhood."

Lamp seems to be made to play with, like a toy: light intensity can be adjusted by winding up the nut screw and moving the lampshade lower or higher.

Fade lamp family by Matti Klenell

I admire simplicity and subtlety of Fade lamp design. It will add tasteful decorative effect to all minimalist interiors. The tiny splash of red is genius! Fade lamp family was created by talented Swedish designer Matti Klenell in 2007. Manufacturer: Bals Tokyo.

Birdie lamps: I want to fly away :)

I should dedicate this post to Ingo Maurer, as a tribute to his unique imagination and truly creative thinking. His designs express great sense of humor, individuality and provocative nature. Their true originality attracts everyone's attention. It seems to me that Ingo Maurer is more an artist than a designer.

Bird inspired lamps are fascinating. Maybe I should rather write: flying inspired.
