Humlegården apartment by Tham & Videgård Hansson

Renovation of the Humlegården apartment in Stockholm was inspired by the work of Swedish artists and architects like Carl Larsson and Josef Frank. Tham & Videgård Hansson architects designed multicoloured floor plan, which was also meant to remind foliage in the nearby Humlegården park, changing its colours with passing of the seasons.
The overlapping, oversized, bold colours applied to the parquet and climbing the walls create intriguing effect and almost surreal atmosphere.

Allandale House by William O`Brian Jr

A cabin in Mountain West was designed by William O`Brian Jr in 2009/10 and almost immediately gain a lot of publicity. The structure of the house is extraordinary - based on three extruded, asymmetrical A-frames. The glass walls provide an illusion of unity between the interiors and the surrounding nature. The architect names Allandale House "a cabin of curiosities", as it hosts an eccentric collection of artifacts as well as a library and a wine cellar.

Don't let your eyes deceive you - the images of beautiful interiors are rendered visualisations created by Peter Guthrie, talented Swedish 3D artist.

Furniture design by Thomas Feichtner

Thomas Feichtner, an internationally renown industrial designer and artist, works in his own studio based in Vienna. He was honoured with the most prestigious design awards and became a professor for product design at the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design.

All his works are very individual and characterized by clean, minimalist, architectural construction. Actually, the style made me think about the issue of "feminity" and "masculinity" in design. Does this division exist?

Do you remember discussion concerning Nika Zupanc? If her designs are constantly described as "feminine", can these be regarded as "masculine"?

Mirror cube tree hotel by Tham & Videgård Arkitekter

Mirror cube tree hotel, designed by Tham & Videgård Arkitekter, was opened this summer in Sweden. Located in Harads, about 60 km south of the arctic circle, Mirror cube is an eco-friendly, unique, camouflaged refuge in the middle of the forest. The exterior surface, clad in mirrored glass, reflects the surroundings and makes the structure almost entirely invisible among the trees.

To protect the birds from colliding with the glass walls, an infrared film, visible only to them was laminated into the panels. 360 degree view from the windows allows the guests to enjoy picturesque landscape all year round.

Living Divani: Family Chair, Drop table, Pasticca sofa and Garden plate table

Family Chair collection (2010) from Living Divani caught my eye a while ago - fun and unpretentious design with beautiful graphic outlines. The chairs compose nicely with translucent Drop table (2010) that distorts the shapes behind and plays with our perception of space. Both designs were created by Junya Ishigami, a talented Japanese architect.

Pasticca (2010), modular seating system by Piero Lissoni is worth noticing as well. It allows to create endless compositions of sofas and lounge sets. Rounded shapes, pleasing to the eye, fit elegantly in open-space interiors.

Garden plate (2010) is another great design by Junya Ishigami - a low, translucent table meant to be an “out-of-scale” home garden. I love the idea!

Thin Black Lines by Nendo

Thin black lines, a furniture collection by Japanese design studio Nendo will be presented together with Phillips de Pury & Company at the Saatchi Gallery in London this fall. The designers describe:

"Outlines were the theme of this collection. Slight black lines like the traces of sketches drawn in the air made transparent surfaces and volumes appear, which we assigned practical functions. The outlines remained after simplifying paintings of plants and animals. They are condensed expressions of meaning, similar to Japanese calligraphy. The designs gently break the relationship of before and behind, and traverse at times the space between two and three dimensions. Multi-faceted and constantly morphing, they move alternately between the becoming and collapse of form."

Lamps: the naked bulb

What is the most popular design theme ever? I suppose it is not difficult to guess. But is the bulb itself a design icon? Endlessly transformed and tortured by designers all over the world. New lightning technologies couldn't have stop the process, the bulb only gained new incarnations. Inspiring?
